Two titans of the piano, Martha Argerich and Steven Kovacevich, come to the Sheldonian Theatre for a piano duo programme pivoting on Beethoven’s extraordinary Grosse Fuge Op. 134 – the colossus that once ended the composer’s thirteenth string quartet and is heard here in the composer’s own arrangement for two pianists.
It is preceded by the heavenly – Mozart’s crystalline G major variations – and followed by the mesmerising – impressionistic piano works by Debussy including the four-hand arrangement of his Prélude à l’apres midi d’un faune.
