A one day festival from Oxford’s global folk community orchestra, Starling Sessions, and special guests. Tandem are taking over the Sheldonian Theatre to mark four years of Starling Sessions, a global folk community orchestra born of Tandem’s festival days and grown to be one of Oxford’s most treasured and joyous live acts. Joining them is an eclectic line-up of performers from around the world.
Tandem Collective and OCM present a day of music and workshops followed by an early evening show celebrating the joy of community and connection through music. Workshops are open to all ages and experience levels (under 18s must be accompanied by an adult at all times).
Starting at 1.15pm, the festival takes place in both the Sheldonian Theatre and The Nest. Food will be provided by Oxford Community Action Kitchen. The afternoon events are free to attend, with paid tickets on sale for the evening performances and afterparty.
Afternoon events include performances by Tarik Beshir, Oxford Timorese Community Band, and Nostos Greek Polyphonic Group, and a workshop with Starling Sessions.
Performing alongside Starling Sessions in the evening will be Sacred Funk 4tet: A new all-star band playing ancient music for modern times. Featuring two-time Grammy Award-winning percussionist Lekan Babalola and acclaimed British clarinettist Kate Luxmoore, the quartet blends ancient, spiritual music and Yoruba rhythms from West Africa with jazz harmonies, and improvisation.
The afterparty, with limited tickets available, will take place at The Nest with Natty Hi-Fi, Oxford’s No1 Roots Reggae Sound System.
