Opus 48: J. S. Bach - Mass in B Minor

Opus 48 presents J.s. Bach Mass in B Minor, Featuring the Musical and Amicable Society, Directed by David Crown.

Johann Sebastian Bach’s Mass in B Minor stands as a pinnacle of the choral repertoire. Completed in the final years of his life, the Mass represents the culmination of a lifetime of musical genius - a summation of Bach’s profound faith, dazzling contrapuntal skill and unrivalled ability to touch the human spirit.

Rather than composing the Mass in one sitting, Bach assembled it across several decades, reworking earlier movements and writing new music of extraordinary ambition to create a universal statement of belief. The result is a vast musical tapestry that brings together every style he mastered: joyous ceremonial choruses, intimate arias of personal reflection, athletic fugues of breathtaking complexity and moments of luminous stillness. Few works match its scope, variety or emotional reach.

From the extraordinary opening of the Kyrie and the exuberance of the Gloria to the serene transcendence of the Sanctus and the radiance of the final Dona nobis pacem, this is music of astonishing breadth.

Opus 48, together with the incredible talents of the Musical and Amicable Society orchestra and rising star soloists, brings this monumental score to the splendour of Oxford’s Sheldonian Theatre. This promises to be an unforgettable evening of one of the greatest works ever written, performed live in Oxford.
