A gigantean celebration of nature, love, and life, the Symphony is the quintessential example of Mahler's Symphonic thesis: 'The Symphony must be like the World, it must embrace everything'. From the striking brass chords of the opening movement - 'Pan Awakens' - to the Heavenly sounds of the bell-imitating Children's Choir, this Symphony features some of Mahler's most eclectic writing. Mezzo Rhian Davies makes her debut with the Orchestra, as texts from Nietzsche and 'Das Knaben Wunderhorn' are celebrated in a piece that ends with the immortal subtitle: 'What Love Tells Me'.
Oxford Millennium Orchestra are an ambitious and exciting large-scale Symphony Orchestra, with recent critically-acclaimed performances of Mahler 7, Shostakovich 5, and Berlioz's ‘Symphonie Fantastique’. Praised by ‘Seen and Heard International’ for their 'thrilling' sound, the orchestra specialise in large-scale and daring performances.
