Oakeshott Lectures: Amy Wax - Free Our Shaving Cream: Young Conservatives’ Discontent

In the third Oakeshott Lecture of 2026, the world-leading legal expert Professor Amy Wax will analyse the key causes of discontent among young conservatives. The event will be introduced by University Chancellor William Hague and following her lecture Professor Wax will be joined onstage by the eminent demographer and political scientist, Professor Eric Kaufmann, for a public discussion. 

Amy Wax is Professor of Law at the University of Pennsylvania Law School with specialisms in neurology and social welfare. She is graduate of Yale (Biophysics and Bioscience; 1975), Oxford (Philosophy, Physiology, Psychology; 1976), Havard (Medicine, 1981), and Columbia (Law, 1987). She has won multiple academic prizes, practiced both medicine and law, and published the monograph Race, Wrongs, and Remedies: Group Justice in the 21st Century (2009) as well as multiple peer-reviewed papers. 

Eric Kaufmann is a Canadian political scientist, demographer and Professor of Politics and Director of the Centre for Heterodox Social Science at the University of Buckingham. He is the author of many academic books and papers including Shall the Religious Inherit the Earth? (2010), Whiteshift (2018), and Taboo: How Making Race Sacred Produced a Cultural Revolution (2024). 

William Hague is Chancellor of the University of Oxford, former Leader of the Conservative Party and Opposition, and biographer of William Pitt the Younger (2005) and William Wilberforce (2008).
